As the Presidential race heats up, former President Bill Clinton last night delivered a speech which ran for almost 50 minutes in which has reignited speculation that his wife Hillary Clinton, who is the current Secretary of State, could be set to make another bid for the White House in 2016.
The speech, which many have said was a high-energy validation of all that President Obama has worked towards during his time in office, was littered with references to his wife. At one point he said: "He appointed Cabinet members who supported Hillary in the primaries. Heck, he even appointed Hillary!" This remark won the former President a standing ovation - one of many received on the night.
Hillary Clinton, who was some 1,000 miles away in East Timor, said at a news conference that she had heard parts of her husband's speech, adding: "It is a great honor for him to BE nominating the president. This is the first convention I've missed in many, many years."
During the 50-minute speech, Clinton not only reaffirmed his support for Obama but reminded voters that the economy had recovered significantly during the President's first term in office and that Obama had laid the foundations for long-term strong recovery. Clinton added: "If you want a 'you're-on-your-own, winner-take-all' society, you should support the Republican ticket. If you want a country of shared prosperity and shared responsibility - a 'we're-all-in-this-together' society - you should vote for Barack Obama and Joe Biden." He also added: "It is absolutely urgent we win this election."
